URGENT NEWS: Please click here to read about a major threat to the Mosel.

There are only three bus routes on the main stretch of the Mosel that are likely to be of interest to wine tourists. The main one is the 333 which runs in sections from Trier to Neumagen-Dhron; from Neumagen-Dhron to Piesport; from Piesport to Bernkastel-Kues; from Bernkastel-Kues to Traben-Trarbach; and from Traben-Trarbach to Bullay. You can find timetables online at www.moselbahn.de Click on 'Fahrplan' on the left and select the route you want, though note that many services seem to continue on to the next section without a break. These timetables do give information as to which services go through Ürzig, but note that Ürziger Muhle (mill) is on the Erden side of the river. Of course, from Erden it isn't too far to walk to Ürzig. There are many alternative routes within this service; some pass on one side of the river around particular villages while other variants use the other side of the river. Where the timetable simply shows a downward line this means that these stops are bypassed.

The other routes of interest are the 300 and 301, which both run from Wittlich Hbf (Hauptbahnhof, or main trainstation) to Bernkastel by different routes: the 300 goes via Zeltingen and Wehlen while the 301 goes via Osann-Monzel. Since Wittlich train station has good connections to Trier it's usually much quicker, easier and cheaper to use this route than by bus alone on the 333. You can find timetables at www.rmv-bus.de Click on 'Fahrplandownload' on the right, and type in either Zeltingen, Wehlen, or Bernkastel.

There are also numerous bus services around Trier, including the No. 86 that runs from Trier right the way up the Ruwer valley, passing through the famous wine villages of Eitelsbach, Mertesdorf (home of Maximin Grünhaus), Kasel, and on to Waldrach. It's only about 20-25 minutes on the bus to either Eitelsbach or Mertesdorf. There is also a service that runs from Trier to Igel, near the Saar, and the home of the famous Igel Column, but I haven't been able to find details for these online yet.
